Gist of discussion of the meeting

The attending medical / association / union were briefed on the purpose of meeting and their views on enhancing training for doctors in cosmetic medicine were invited

The meeting noted that a registered medial practitioner may perform any type of medical procedures. It is not a statutory requirement that a certain type of medical procedure may only be performed by specialists, although registered medical practitioners may only perform procedures they are competent in.

The meeting recognised that all along doctors were participating in continuing medical education (“CME”) and there was a need to enhance training in cosmetic medicine, including hands-on training, for doctors in general practice. It is equally important to assure the public that the profession in committed for continuous upgrading of the professional standard and that doctors performing cosmetic procedures are trained in such practice.

The meeting noted that the attending association / union have all along organised CME accreditation training activities for doctors, including training in cosmetic medicine. They were encouraged to enhance such training activities in the future. The Hong Kong Surgical Laser Association informed the meeting that it was actively pursuing the organization of a structured course related to cosmetic medical procedures.

Connecting the provision of relevant information to patient on qualification of doctors, the meeting noted that while certificate obtained for individual CME activities are not quotable, certificates for CME accredited training courses are displayable inside a doctor’s clinic subject to the principles and rules of information dissemination to the public under the relevant Code of Professional Conduct of the Medical Council. This would be a form of recognition for doctors actively participating the CME activities relevant to cosmetic medical procedures.

The meeting noted that in the long run, effort would be made to explore the feasibility of organising structured courses in cosmetic medicine, such as diploma course lasting for 6 months, leading to quotable qualifications by the Medical Council.
